Yu Yunique Review: Premium Smartphone at an Ultra Affordable Price

Yu Yunique Review

As Mathew Henry Would Say: “It’s Better Late Than Never“. Let’s start our Review.

Yu’s latest smartphone that hit the Indian markets last month is the YUNIQUE. The smartphone was touted to be the budget king by pricing it well under Rs.5,000. Though we are a bit late in presenting the review we took out took and played around with the device for quite some time now, so how well the new leader of the budget segment can fare in the highly competitive smartphone markets like India? well, let’s find out in my full review.

Yu YUNIQUE Build and Design: The smartphone fits perfectly in our hands thanks to compact sized 4.7-inches display, we never had any trouble holding it in one hand and using it. On the top, we have the 3.5mm audio jack, on the bottom the  USB port for charging and data transfers and the placements of these two ports is well appreciated. On the front, as said above the 4.7-inches HD(1280*720) IPS display, main earpiece, front facing the 2-megapixel camera, the three on screen buttons do take up some part of the display. Remember the Yuphoria smartphone’s volume and power button placement? if you do YUNIQUE also has the same placement but if you don’t, the power button is placed in between the volume up and down buttons to the right side. These buttons are tactile and give a good amount of feedback when pressed, but this placement needs some time before you get habituated. On the rear side, the Saturn rings found on Yuphoria are still there with an 8-megapixel camera sensor and an LED flash fitted well into the rings. Yu branding along with a tag line that says “Made for You, Assembled in China” and the speaker grills. Strip opening the back cover gives you access to the SIM card slot and a memory card, a 2,000mAh non-removable battery can be found along with these slots.

Though the device is completely made of plastic, the look and feel of the device looks premium for the money spent. I have to say, the device doesn’t look anywhere near to a device that just costs 5,000 bucks. The only complaint we have been the rubbery back that attracts fingerprints easily and requires constant cleaning, but then we can’t complain considering the price point. During our testing, we have dropped the device couple of time from hip height and the device survived both the time without any scratch or a mark, this really surprised us. Trust me the build quality is absolutely premium.

Yu YUNIQUE Display: Yu YUNIQUE sports a 4.7-inches HD(1280*720) IPS display with corning gorilla Glass 3 protection. The display accounts to a pixel density of whopping 312PPI. If some would have asked a year ago regarding an HD display on a smartphone that costs a mere 5,000 I would have said NO a big No. The display is great and considerably the best among the smartphones priced well under 5,000. The colors look natural and reproduction is also great so are the viewing angles, the company had kept the saturation level well under control so the media consumption on the device will be a delight. Do note we are talking about a smartphone that costs just 5,000. There are other brands that are still stuck with a qHD display, but YU here is providing an HD display and Corning Gorilla glass 3 protection.

YU YUNIQUE Performance and Gaming Experience: The device is powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 410Soc clocked at 1.2GHz 64-bit Quad-Core processor coupled with Adreno 306 GPU. There is 1GB of Ram and 8GB internal storage. For one am still surprised to see Yu providing an HD display on a smartphone that is priced under 5000 here comes yet another sweet surprise, YU YUNIQUE is the first smartphone in India to be powered by Snapdragon 410 under Rs.5,000. Snapdragon 410 is tried and tested chipset that performs brilliantly in normal day-to-day usage switching between apps, GPS navigation, media consumption are smooth in action negligible to no lag for a normal user. Expecting 2GB of Ram for this price is not fair enough but YUNIQUE tend to lag if you have many apps running in the background as the available Ram on the device is around 400MB of 1GB.

Gaming Experience: Being a budget smartphone I don’t expect the device to run high-end games but to my surprise I could find some exceptions on this baby. I tried playing Asphalt 8 in the highest graphical mode as I was expecting the device started to drop frames and lag so I changed it to lowest graphic settings and now the device could play the games with occasional frame drops. Games like subway surfers, temple run 2, Cut the rope games ran just fine. To prevent the overheating issues company has cleverly tweaked the software to lower the brightness while playing games, I won’t say this method works completely but does a fair job, but we not fans of this setting as the brightness may become a trouble if you are playing in a bright environment. We didn’t notice any overheating issues at, any point, but it does get a little warm on the rear side and some part of the display. Overall a big thumbs up again in this department as well.

YU YUNIQUE Camera: Yu YUNIQUE features an 8-megapixel autofocus rear camera with LED flash on the rear side and a 2-megapixel front camera for selfies and videos calls. Won’t really say the smartphone has a good camera but a decent camera for the price that we pay. The camera app has some features by default like the various color mode, HDR mode, color conditions and default camera settings like white balance, lower/higher the megapixel count and etc. We can make peace with the camera quality and the picture it takes but then the device tends to suffer a bit under low-light which is expected. Take a look at the camera samples below.

YU YUNIQUE Storage and OS: The device sports an 8GB internal storage with an SD card slot for memory expansion up to 32GB. We are sure that storage won’t is an issue any point of time as you don’t really install some heavy games. Coming to the OS, the device runs on Android 5.1.1 Lollipop Stock Rom instead of the CM OS. Well we really don’t know the reason behind providing a Stock ROM instead of CM like other Yu smartphones but then company says that you can flash the CM OS if in case you like to customize or play around with your smartphone if you are not familiar with the flashing process you can stop by any nearest YU service centre and representatives there will  flash the CM OS for you. The performance of the OS is quite snappy and lag free thanks to the processor and the chipset used.

YU YUNIQUE Battery: There is a 2,000mAh battery on this device which when coupled with a processor like Snapdragon 410 result a decent battery life so the battery life on the YUNIQUE is quite decent when compared with its bigger brother YUPHORIA which kind of had an Avg battery life. Although the chipset used on this device supports Qualcomm Quick charging 2.0 it would be unfair for us to ask more for this price point.

During our testing which include normal emails checking, Facebook, twitter notifications and WiFi always turned on the battery could last for a day without any problem but then again during our gaming test the device had to be charged a second time in a day. Overall a decent battery life. The max screen on time we saw is around 4:30-5:00 hours.

Connectivity and Other Features: The company’s promotional tagline says “world’s most affordable 4G HD smartphones” yes YU YUNIQUE is the first smartphone in India to feature 4G LTE under 5,000. 4G Here in HYD worked very well I didn’t notice any drop calls at any point, the in-call quality is also acceptable. WiFi 802.11b/g/n signal reception is also good and could pull decent speeds. Bluetooth 4.0, GPS, and many other connectivity features worked well. OTG is also supported without needing to install any third-party app. YU has all the basic and required connectivity features that one could ask for.

Verdict: Without any doubt I will suggest Yu YUNIQUE smartphone to people who are looking to leave back the featured phone and looking for an affordable 4G smartphone. The device performs neatly in all the departments, a sharp display, decent chipset, good performance combined makes it hard for us to suggest an alternate for YUNIQUE though you need to compromise on some departments like heavy gaming and low-light captures. Phones like ZTE Qlux, Phicomm Energy 653, Redmi 2 are competing with YUNIQUE, except for Redmi 2 none of the other can truly stand in front of YUNIQUE in real-time. Hope you have liked out Yu Yunique Review, if yes do share it.
